How to quantify worth/costs of ATO payment using Amex Explorer (business)?

Hi all
Just need to confirm if “It makes sense to pay the ATO surcharge of 1.45% for my $10k+ BAS bill.

I have Amex Explorer business card – so I’d earn 1 points per $ spent on ATO.

I have gone through A guide to credit cards that earn points with ATO payments - Point Hacks, but still not sure if I understand examples (relating to Qantas points).

Thanks

Hi @mrjk

You mentioned you earn 1 point per $ on your AmEx Explorer Business card.

If you pay a 10k bill then the surcharge is $145 and you will earn 10145 AmEx MR points (Explorer card earns MR points).

10145 MR points = 5072 Airline points (like Krisflyer/velocity etc.)

Say the value of airline point is 1.4c, then 5072 points are worth $71.

If it was me, I wouldn’t pay the $145 surcharge in this case. There maybe some rare situations where you are short of the 5000 points for a redemption and those 5000 points cost more than $145 to purchase from the airline.
