How do Amex referrals work if the applicant applies for a different card than the referrer?

Planning on getting my friend to refer me, but he has the Amex Qantas card and I was planning on getting the Explorer.

Your article shows the points assuming the applicant applies for the same card that the referrer has, but I can’t find out what happens if they are different Amex cards.

Previously I have referred from an Explorer card, where the applicant applied for a Platinum Edge. I received the same points bonus as if the applicant would have applied for an Explorer card.
