Best companion card for AMEX Explorer?

Hello!

In the process of applying for an Explorer CC and would like to pair it with another non-AMEX CC.
I’m prioritising:

  1. Flexible rewards - can’t pledge allegiance to OneWorld or Star
  2. Using points to upgrade to Business Class - currently have a return flight to Rome booked with Thai in late April I would love to upgrade sections of
  3. Lounge access - tend to have one long layover in Bangkok or Singapore or UAE whenever I find a good flight deal

Next couple of years my holiday plans will lead me primarily to Europe. Maybe Japan at the end of this year + USA down the line.

After much reading, I’m gathering the good options are:
a) St George Amplify - however $0 annual fee only for existing customers
b) Coles Rewards - point conversion relatively low
Transferring to Velocity or Asia Miles seems to be most suitable for my flight habits.

Advice is much appreciated! I am a newbie to the game and have all of zero points. The only way is up?
