Will Velocity Family transferred points expire after 30 days?

Transferred to family member and apparently they expire after 30 days. A few posts in Reddit about this aswell as stated by Service Desk when transferring.

How does Velocity identify my ‘own’ points versus those that were transferred in from family member? Or does it just expire from any pool.

Eg. I have 200k points, get family member to transfer another 150k…so total is 350k. I use 320k leaving 30k balance. Will those remaining 30k expire (unless i transfer them out again and punt the problem to the next family member who has to use those 30k within 30 days)?

Am sure there are ways to mitigate this?

Hi @wsr1

I’m not sure I totally understand your situation but I’ll do my best to answer.

Velocity points expire after 2 years of inactivity in your account. So if your account has the same points balance for 24 months, with no points going in or out of your account, those points will expire.

Activity in your account (even if only a few points in or out) will reset your entire points balance, and your points won’t expire for another 24 months.

However: Family transfers do not count as “activity” for the purposes of calculating when points expire. So if your Velocity account has had 23 months of inactivity, and your transfer points from a family member into that account, all points in your account will expire in 30 days unless you add or use points in some other way.

Similarly, if your family member has not used their accout for 23 months and then transfers points into another account, their remaining balance will expire in 30 days unless there is some other activity in their account.

How does Velocity identify your “own” points versus those that are transferred? It doesn’t. Once the points are transferred, they’re yours, and they’ll expire after 24 months of your account’s last earning/using points activity.

To use the example you’ve given: if you have 200k points, and receive 150k points from another family member, then use 320k points, the remaining 30k points will now not expire for 24 months from the date you used your 320k points or from the date of any any other activity on your account, whichever is later.

Ways to mitigate points expiring? Keep your account active by earning and/or using points. Simple as that.

Hope this helps! Please get back to us if I haven’t understood something.
