Will this itinerary work for a Qantas Classic Rewards RTW redemption?

So using seats.aero, plus greatcirclemapper (comes out to 30228 miles) i have this business RTW flight planned
MEL-SIN SQ208
SIN-BKK SQ706 (stop over 1)
BKK-DOH QR837
DOH-IST QR839 (stop over 2)
IST-DOH QR240 (stop over 3)
DOH-MIA QR777
MIA-HAV AA1447 (stop over 4)
HAV-MIA AA2706
MIA-MEX AA264 (stop over 5)
MEX-LAX AA2547
LAX-NAN FJ811
NAN-MEL FJ935

I havent done this before so any advice is appreciated. Seems to be 5 stopovers, less than 16 flights, using more than two carriers, all part of OW alliance… Have i missed anything?

I just dont know the best way to book it. Seems like some of the flights dont show on the qantas website, and seats.aero suggests to book through some airlines direct, but others say to call QANTAS direct and get them to book the whole lot in one go
Would love some advice please

Hi @grodgersoz

I hate to be the bearer of bad news but I can see a couple of reasons why your suggested itinerary won’t work.

First, Singapore Airlines is not part of Oneworld so you won’t be able to book SQ flights on Qantas or as part of a Oneworld RTW trip.

Second, if you want to use Qantas points to fly in Business class, be aware that Qatar only makes its flights available to Qantas 3 days before the flight (30 days for Economy), so for all intents and purposes you won’t be able to use Qatar flights on a Qantas RTW itinerary.

To book a RTW flight using Qantas points, you need to book via Qantas direct: either via their website or over the phone.

I’ve never booked a Qantas FF RTW flight but I’ve been around long enough to know that it’s not easy!

Let us know how you go and what you end up with.

Thank you for the advice.

Not all bad news, just got to make some changes

Question: the SQ flights are apparently (according seats.aero) available through the alaska miles program, so does that mean i can get them on the RTW tix?

Hi,

No, Singapore Airlines is a partner of some Oneworld airlines (eg. Alaska), but it’s not in the Oneworld Alliance. In the same way, Qantas partners with some airlines that are not in the Oneworld Alliance (eg. Emirates), but because Emirates is not in Oneworld, you will not be able to include them on a Oneworld RTW flight.

To put it another way: to use Qantas points for a RTW award, you can only use airlines (1) whose reward flights are available via Qantas FF, and (2) which are in the Oneworld Alliance.

Singapore Airlines doesn’t qualify on either count, and you’ll find that Qatar qualifies on (2) as it’s part of Oneworld, but not (1) as you won’t find reward seats available via Qantas. So you won’t be able to use either of those airlines in your itinerary.

ok, that makes sense, thank you.

follow up Q: On seats.aero (im not affiliated or anything, just mentioning it cause its a fun tool ive discovered) it shows that there is a flight Mel-Nan FJ934 on 14/09/25 (direct). However, it doesnt show up on the qantas multi city tool.
Its shows though on the american airlines rewards booking page. Am i supposed to use that instead?
Or is it better to call Qantas customer service?

Anyone have any experience with these sort of non matching data? Whats the point of these amalgamation/data scraping sites if they are wrong?
Or rather, is the Qantas website not showing all the reward flights?
Where is the error likely to be here?

I think that seats.aero is great too!

When I do that search on it, it says that the MEL-NAN itinerary was last seen “8 days ago”. So the most likely explanation is that someone’s grabbed it since then but seats.aero hasn’t updated for some reason.

In any case, even though the itinerary says “MEL-NAN”, when you hover over the points required, or click on the little “i” to the right, you’ll see that it is actually via Sydney.

im looking at the live search function and for the Qantas result its 8 days ago, but for the american airlines result (live) its direct.
Does that mean i have to book the reward flight through AA?
If i do, does that still work with the qantas RTW ticket? I dont understand how to meld them together

Hi,

If the flight is not available through Qantas FF, you can’t use it on your RTW itinerary.

Sometimes airlines make award seats available to some FF programmes but not others (eg. Qatar as I mentioned above). Very commonly, airlines make award seats available to members of their own FF programmes before releasing them to partner FF programmes.

I’m just speculating, but Fiji uses AA Advantage as its FF programme, so it comes as no surprise to me that Fiji would release some award seats to AA and not Qantas. Conceivably, Fiji released, say, 4 award seats to AA Advantage, and 2 of those award seats also to Qantas. The 2 Qantas seats have been taken but the remaining 2 are available via AA. I’m just guessing, but this sort of thing happens all the time.

To repeat: if you’re trying to book a Qantas RTW itinerary, you’re limited to award flights that are available via Qantas FF. If it’s available on another FF programme but not via Qantas FF, you can’t book that flight.

OK, that seems very clear. Thank you.

Devils advocate: the following article from points hack which you linked for me seems to say the exact opposite.

Quote: " If you need help or want to book a partner that doesn’t show up on the Qantas website, then phone Qantas Frequent Flyer."

???

My reading of that quote is that it’s talking about obscure routes on obscure Oneworld airlines which have been made available to Qantas FF but which haven’t been loaded onto the Qantas website.

So if you’re wanting to fly a domestic route on, say, Royal Jordanian, whose airport/s the Qantas website doesn’t recognise or whose booking system hasn’t been fully integrated with Qantas’, then yes, calling Qantas is the way to go.

I wouldn’t have thought that statement is talking about a non-obscure route like NAN-MEL, but hey, there’s no harm in giving Qantas a call and asking. I think I know what their answer will be, but I’ve been wrong plenty of times before! And I’d be very interested to know if I’m wrong so I can learn something myself!
