Hi all, I have humble aspirations to fly from Sydney or Perth to Hamburg one way in late 2026 for as cheap as possible. I am slightly overwhelmed with the choices of cards, points systems and airlines so any tips would be greatly appreciated!
I can see that there are good points seats available from Sydney to London with Qantas. I could then take a cheap flight over to Hamburg. Ideally though, I would fly directly into Hamburg – I’m moving to Germany so will have lots of luggage making transfers tiresome. However, I’m willing to be flexible with my destination to avoid paying lots!
Any suggestions on which frequent flyer scheme to focus on would be ideal. I have Qantas FF and recently signed up for a Westpac credit card which gives Altitude rewards. Thank you!
Hi @jessicasbrown92 and welcome to our community!
From what you write I’m assuming that you’re happy to fly in Economy class and that there’s just one of you – is that correct?
There are three one-stop options to get to Hamburg from Australia that I can think of. From Sydney or Perth you could fly either Emirates via Dubai, or Qatar via Doha. From Perth you could fly Qantas to London and then British Airways or another cheap airline to Hamburg.
My guess if you’re flying Economy is that either Qantas Frequent Flyer (for use on Qantas or Emirates) or Velocity (for use on Qatar or Virgin’s “wet-leased” flights) would do the trick. So now you need to research: search for flights to Hamburg on Qantas’ and Virgin’s websites, and see if you can identify a trend regarding which of the two FF programmes have more availability. Then decide which FF programme’s points you would like to accumulate.
Alternatively, you could look at cheap and/or low-cost-carrier options, or for sales, and pay for economy flights outright.
I hope this helps!
