SGN - SIN - SYD - self-transfer risk

Can someone share their experience or insights into a self-transfer at Singapore airport?

My original flight from Vietnam to Singapore, which had a 5-hour buffer for my Singapore to Sydney flight, got cancelled. Now I have to decide whether an alternative flight with only 3-hour buffer is enough.

Relevant details. My SGN to SIN flight is with Vietnam Airlines. My flight from SIN to SYD is British Airways (J class). I need to collect bags, change terminals and then check-in. I am travelling with a party of 6, including myself and two kids (2 and 4).

Appreciate any insights before I take the punt on Vietnam airlines on time arrival.

Hi there,

The risk-adversed me would not risk a 3-5 hours transit on separate PNR especially with young kids in tow.

All is well if your flight is on time. 3 hours transfer is very doable in Changi. I only worry if your first flight is delayed for whatever reason and you can’t make it to your next flight, you will be on your own trying to find alternative flights.

Thanks - always appreciate your wisdom. Yeah its a bit dicey. Managed to find a singapore airline flight that gives me more buffer and statistically, more reliable. Your point on single PNR is excellent and prompted me to go to a travel agent to get this sorted out as I also have a domestic leg due to the cancellation.

for the benefit of others, my original flight was with Vietjet. they are one of the few airlines that fly to Cam Ranh direct from singapore and return. They cancelled the flight for operational reasons. I had to fill up a form to get a full refund - probably one of the best refund experereince - I didn’t even speak with anybody. Maybe I just got lucky.
