I’ve been eyeing off a Virgin Australia trip to Tokyo with my family.
We live in Melbourne but my wife’s family live in Cairns so we thinking of adding 2 nights in cairns either side of a trip to Tokyo.
How would I go about booking this? Would I book a return from Melbourne to cairns and a return from cairns to Tokyo on a separate booking or is there a better way of doing this?

I would use $, I try to save my points for a European business class trip. I’d also like to use this trip to boost my status credits next year to keep my platinum status.
I used Google Flights multicity to construct the itinerary. Unfortunately, not bookable via Virgin website. I’d suggest trying an old school travel agency or walking into Flight Centre or the like to try and price it all in one ticket to get a good price if you rather not use the OTA options.
Alternatively, I would book MEL-CNS and CNS-HND return separately.
Never done it myself so hope that’s the optimal way to do it.
