I need your help again. I’ve only ever used my Krisflyer miles to upgrade on SQ and found it very easy. I’m really unsure how a Star Alliance upgrade works.
How do you use Krisflyer miles to request an upgrade on a United flight?
Is it best to call United and book the correct, upgradable class of economy airfare first?
Do I request the upgrade through SQ website or United?
Can you find out before booking if there are upgrades available on your flight?
Your knowledge and experience would be greatly appreciated.

I would call Krisflyer to find out more because you are using Krisflyer miles. Just ring them and ask if you have any further questions. They are fairly helpful.
I would check award availability before contemplating upgrade. In your case, you could check on United website, whether they have availability in the class you want on the flights you want before booking the economy upgradeable seats. If there are no availabilities of award seats of your interest, you generally won’t be able to upgrade.
