I have enough points for a business class trip, but it looks like they don’t have that option at all, anywhere. Any idea why?
Also, any way to minimise the surcharges? Even if we fly economy return for 2 ppl, it is over $1000 in surcharges.

This itinerary will likely get you something travelling on Etihad.
Business Class availability on Etihad is constrained from Australia to Abu Dhabi but not impossible to find especially when booking further out. For example, I was able to find business class seats looking at the very end of the calendar on the 5th of September next year. Coming to 121,000 Pts and $720.19 for one way one person.
Velocity does levy quite a hefty surcharge on award bookings for Etihad (and now Singapore Airlines) as well so it probably makes more sense value wise to book business rather than economy.
The only way to reduce your surcharge is to not book Etihad but they are often the most convenient and only option. You are opened up to more options if you transfer points over to Singapore Krisflyer but that takes a hit to your points balance.
