How to fly from Melbourne to Los Angeles or Canada for a family of 4 with Velocity points?

Hi team,

My wife and i are in the initial stages of planning a family trip from Melbourne to LA/Canada next year. We are a family of 2 adults and 2 kids (5yrs and 9yrs). We currently have 1 million combined velocity points and were hoping to be able to use them to fly business class.

From my early research, it seems most of the direct flights are via Delta airlines. Has anyone flown delta business class from Melbourne before?

I know its subjective but do you think is it a good use of points? We had originally planned to go to Europe and the Qatar qsuites business class looks to be a lot nicer then the Deta option.

We will only be in LA for a couple of days as the kids want to go to Disney land and universal studios before heading to Canada where my wife has family. I am open to flying directly to Canada but I figured a MElb-LA route would have more flights and give me a better chance at securing 4 business class seats.

thanks in advance for any help

Hi @souheilelkhoury,
I have flown Delta business class from Sydney to LA quite a few years ago (before COVID) and it was very good I must say. It was in the “old” Business Class cabin, but it still had a lie flat bed and plenty of room. I had what I would rate as the best steak I’ve ever had on a plane!! It was cooked to perfection. Here is a much more recent review of their new Delta One offering:

I can’t see any Melbourne - LAX flights at the moment. It looks like you’d have to fly via Sydney. But direct flights are coming soon according to this write up:

As far as your Qatar QSuites vs Delta One go, I don’t think they’re on the same level from what I’ve read and watched in reviews but they’re certainly the best of the US based carriers for long haul at the moment. If you want the best of both worlds and don’t mind an extended luxury travel experience, why not fly Qatar to LA via Doha? You’ll get to enjoy one of the best Business Class lounges in the world during your stopover as well.

I guess your ultimate choice of airline would be influenced by your final destination. If you’re going to the US West Coast you could look to fly via Japan (ANA), Singapore (Singapore Airlines) or Vancouver (Air Canada), as well as the Qatar option and/or Delta (via Sydney). If you decide to head to Europe, then either Qatar or Singapore Airlines would be a fantastic option. There are many ways to skin your proverbial rewards seat cat!

Thankfully you have a nice basket full of velocity points which should just about get the 4 of you to where you decide to go. You’d need to price up some sample reward itineraries to see a firm estimate for both points and taxes.

Best of luck.
See you up front! :airplane:
