I’m trying to book reward business class flights from
New York to LAX in Sep 23. Having a lot of trouble with limited availability (and indirect) with Qantas and nothing with Velocity.
Any ideas that I haven’t thought about? I also have access to Citi points (prestige card)

You aren’t doing anything wrong. The reality is that the American carriers really don’t release much award availability to partner airlines as they have gone for a flexible pricing-esque model with their own frequent flyer programs. I had a look and it seems that American Airlines would be your best bet as they seem to have decent one-stop options. But yes, non-stop flights are hard to come by especially in business. If you do encounter non-stop flights, it is a lot cheaper to book with Etihad Guest miles on American than with Qantas as Etihad prices all US domestic flights the same at 25,000 points in business or 32,500 for ‘premium’ routes.
