Do you save money/points if you book a return awards flight?

Hi all,

Just a quick question.

Do you save money/points if you book a return awards flight? Or is it the same if you book two single tickets?

The reason I am asking this question is because obviously the first flight opens for booking in the calendar prior to the return flight and I am expecting the outbound flight to get snapped up by other frequent flyers if its a hot route.

I’d book two one-ways to lock them in. Too many ppl in the same boat looking to spend their covid point savings.
