Can you book a British Airways code share flight (Vueling metal) and credit to American Airlines?

Hello,

I fly around 40 times per year with vueling throughout Europe. This year I will be flying more regularly to America. Just wondering, if I purchase a BA flight that is co shared with vueling, can I get points with American Airlines - BA’s partner? Also, if anyone has some inter-europe tips for redeeming points to increase an international status that would be great. Maybe there is a different route I could take to make my European flights count for more?
