Is it possible to upgrade an existing trip with cash? I’ve made the original booking but want to upgrade without cancelling and starting all over again. I’d like to avoid using pointa for this one

Sure can! (As far as I can tell). Cash is king :).
Try modifying your reservation on website or ring up Qantas help desk. Might be worthwhile comparing the upgrade costs against a new reservation, in case for whatever reason upgrading costs more.
