I will soon be travelling to Canada and the USA. There is a possibility I will be travelling with Alaskan Airlines while in North America. Being aware they are not a member of Oneworld or Star Alliance, what is the best way to benefit from any points earned flying with them? Do I need to join Mileage Plan?

It really depends whether you are collecting status points or just after points. If only points, best to credit to a FFP that you will manage to use the points for.
