AAdvantage redemption to Europe with stopover

I vaguely remember reading somewhere that one of the best uses of aa miles was to redeem award seat on Etihad from Sydney to New York via Abu Dhabi. The article also I think mentioned that 1 stop over was permitted in Europe.

Or it might have been with Qatar or emirates. I cant remember.
