I’m midway through my RTW trip booked using Qantas points and it’s been great!
I just received an email saying they’ve changed the date of my Paris to Malaysia flight. Does anyone know if I’m able to call them to change the date of that flight then? I was under the impression that once I start the trip, I’m not able to make any changes.
Route: Melbourne > Tokyo > Singapore (via Malaysia) > Seoul (via Hong Kong) > London (via Helskinki) > Lisbon > Paris > Singapore (via Malaysia)
Firstly, I would be phoning up Qantas and ask them where you stand. Ask them to confirm their advice via email, so that you have it writing too.
Having said that, generally speaking… if Qantas has made the schedule change (such as altering departure times or canceling a flight), they will usually automatically rebook you on an alternative flight with no penalty to you - assuming the replacement sector meets the same fare constraints, rules, points, fees etc… If the new arrangements are not suitable, you should be able to change it to a different flight. I’d imagine it still has to satisfy the requirements of the Qantas RTW itinerary though.
One thing to be aware of though, is that once you accept the new flight and your ticket is reissued, any more changes to your flight(s) would be viewed as a non-essential change. In other words, a voluntary change. So if you made more changes, you would be charged the requisite fees and taxes etc… (either in points or cash).
Fare rules for your RTW itinerary (and most flights too really) are fairly complex, so I’d definitely be contacting Qantas for clarification. Usually if you need to make a change to an itinerary that has already commenced, you would have to speak to an agent so they can make the changes without it cancelling the remainder of your flights.
