Hi! Any suggestions for how best to get flights, looking to fly the family to Dubai in mid January. I can find Sydney to Middle East via Dubai but not just to Dubai. Any suggestions on how best to book with Qantas points?

I think your best bet to finding flights to Dubai would be to use the Multi-City search tool. You need to be logged into your Qantas Frequent Flyer account and tick the “Book with Rewards” option as well as “Flexible with dates for all flights”.
I did a quick search in early Feb 2026 (nothing seems available in January, other than a few sparse Economy seats):
January is a very popular time to be in Dubai, as the weather is great and mild (unlike right now - it was 51C last week!! 
). Not to mention that it’s always a super popular time of year, for obvious reasons with Christmas/New Years and school holidays right around Australia.
How many people are you looking to fly with and in what class are you aiming? That’s going to affect reward seat availability a lot. Also, be flexible with your dates and travel routes as much as possible too. Have a look at this recent post to help you out:

We are looking to go the four of us (2 adults and 2 kids) economy, I think we have two options either to fly via Dubai on the way back as that will be in Feb and it looks like there is a bit more availability (it does mean changing all 3 of our flights so not ideal when you factor cost to change) or alternatively we could book Syd to Adelaide and Adelaide to Dubai as it looks like that would work around 17th of Jan and then leave Dubai 4 or 5 days later it just doesn’t seem as efficient from a points spend.
Any thoughts would be great, thank you!
